Horse Sketch Artist: Sawrey Gilpin Date:1787 Sawrey Gilpin, (1733–1807), was an English animal painter, illustrator, and etcher born in Cumbria England. He specialised in paintings of horses and dogs. He learnt to draw from his father and at the age of 14 was sent to London to study with the marine painter Samuel Scott. Based in Covent garden Gilpin enjoyed sketching the horses and carts that passed by and soon it was obvious that animals, especially horses, would become his speciality.
