Went and saw the new Blade Runner today. At first I was kind of skeptical because I didn’t think the first movie was really franchise material but I was delightfully surprised to find that this was a very good movie. My only complaint was that it was a bit long but even then if I was watching it at home and could get up and pause it, it wouldn’t be too bad. The film has a lot of twists and turns that keep you guessing throughout and at least to me and my date, they were genuinely surprising. Ryan Gosling did a wonderful job portraying K/Joe and it was great to see Harrison Ford reprise Deckard. Visually it stayed true to the original with fantastic effects and style. The gritty, neon city was fun to revisit and some of the new places introduced were equally interesting. Throughout the film, themes of real and unreal and K’s sense of identity persist. Without giving anything away, I was a little heart broken for him when he learned the truth. Joi (Ana de Armas) was really neat and sad, Jared Leto was a really interesting character and if they make another I would like to see more of him and I always enjoy seeing Robin Wright in things.

Over all the only problem I see is that if they continue on as a franchise with more sequels, the series may get too big for it’s self and collapse. It might also get away from the original ideas and themes if they move on with a more rebellion centered plot for the next movie. This is just a possibility though and could be wrong!

In all it’s a great movie, if you enjoy the original, definitely check this one out. It feels like an extension of the first, Ryan Gosling is well worth the watch and it’s a great movie!
